WASHINGTON D.C.: The chief executives of Intel and Qualcomm will travel to Washington this week to discuss China with top government officials.
Among the concerns of the chip makers will be market conditions, export controls and other matters affecting their businesses, an official said. It was not known which US officials the chip makers will meet with.
Neither officials at Intel or Qualcomm would comment on the reports. Nor would White House officials.
It was further reported that the CEOs of other chip companies will also be in Washington this week.
The talks come as U.S. officials weigh tightening export rules affecting high-performance computing chips and shipments to China’s Huawei Technologies Co Ltd.
New export rules could impact a just-introduced Intel artificial intelligence chip that could be shipped to China, along with Qualcomm’s license to sell chips to Huawei.
In October 2022 the Biden administration issued new rules to freeze China’s semiconductor industry from receiving new US-made chips.
Chip maker Nvidia would be particularly harmed by new prohibitions from doing business with China.
In recent years, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger and Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon have met often with officials in Washington as the government seeks to move chip manufacturing from Asia to the United States.
Speculation about the coming meetings includes concerns the chip industry has about further tightening of trade with China.
Some US chip companies see 20 percent of their business coming from China.
