SAUGUS — The Saugus Lions Club and the Fire Department hosted a toy drive on Saturday, Nov. 25, at the Saugus Senior Center to bring Christmas cheer to families in need.

The initiative recognizes the challenges families face during these trying times and aims to support those struggling, ensuring that children receive the joy of Christmas.

Retired Capt. Bill O’Malley, formerly of the Saugus Fire Department, oversees the collection and distribution of donated toys. The call for donations is a response to many families’ increased difficulties, emphasizing the importance of community support during this festive season.

“What we do is we collect whether it be toys or gift cards because some of the unfortunate are older and don’t require toys anymore,” Michelle Wendell, who helps organize the event, said in an interview with the Daily Item previously.

Contributions will be welcomed until Dec. 14, upon which O’Malley will gather the toys and distribute them to parents of selected students who will receive the donations. The fire department then collaborates with Saugus schools to look for students needing help, the Daily Item reported previously.

According to the Lions Club, residents are encouraged to share this information with their networks, extending the toy drive’s reach.

Attendees also had the opportunity to meet Lily the Lion and Mrs. Claus, who were present to greet and express gratitude to those contributing to the cause. According to the club, the collective effort aims to make Christmas 2023 a brighter and more joyful occasion for families in the community.

The organizers urged individuals to spread the word through various channels, including social media, to maximize community involvement in this initiative.
