A Melbourne father-of-two is taking on tech giant Apple after suffering second-degree burns when his iPhone exploded in his pocket.
Scientist Robert De Rose was sitting in his office when he felt pain in his leg and heard a fizzing sound coming from his pocket.
“I heard a faint pop sound, followed by a fizz and then I felt intense pain on my right leg, so I immediately jumped up and realised it was my phone,” he told 7NEWS.
He pulled his iPhone X from his pocket, which was just over a year old, to find black smoke coming out of it.
De Rose suffered second-degree burns to his thigh during the 2019 incident.
“I had ash everywhere, and my skin had peeled back,” he said.
De Rose said he reported the issue directly to Apple but after receiving no response, he decided to seek compensation and wants to warn the millions of people who own the device of the dangers.
Carbone Lawyers’ Tony Carbone, told 7NEWS they are representing a second Melbourne man who claims he was left with a burnt wrist after his Apple Watch overheated.
Two lawsuits have been filed with the County Court and Apple will now start preparing a defence.
An Apple spokesperson said the company takes customer safety extremely seriously and confirmed the two complaints are being investigated.
