BEIJING, June 15 (Xinhua) — The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

TIBET PLANETARIUM

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Tibet Planetarium was held in Lhasa on Sunday. The planetarium, scheduled to open to the public in 2024, will be the highest in the world.

The one-meter-aperture optical telescope installed at the planetarium will be the largest refraction optical telescope in the world, and will serve the dual purposes of scientific research and popularization of science.

ARTIFICIAL GLACIER MELT REDUCTION

Chinese researchers have achieved progress in the study of artificial glacier melt reduction by evaluating the effects of different cover materials, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Results revealed that up to 32 percent of mass loss was preserved in the protected areas compared with that of the unprotected areas. A nanofiber material showed higher albedo than two geotextiles used in the experiments.

RARE BIRDS

Two rare red pheasants have been caught on camera in the Duheyuan National Nature Reserve in central China’s Hubei Province. They are China’s second-class protected animals and are listed as one of the world’s endangered birds.

The red pheasant, Tragopan temminckii, is a medium-sized stocky, red pheasant with white, spotted plumage, a black bill and pink legs.
