YOUNG SCIENTISTS

The age structure of China’s science and technology workers has decreased over the past decade, according to a report.

The China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) has released a report on the country’s sci-tech human resources development in Changsha, central China’s Hunan Province.

The report shows that sci-tech talent aged 39 and below accounted for 73.89 percent of all sci-tech personnel by the end of 2019, with 9.94 percent aged 50 and above.

RENEWABLE ENERGY

China has seen rapid development of renewable energy in 2021, laying a solid foundation for the country’s pursuit of its carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals, according to a report.

Last year, the country’s renewable energy utilization amounts to the equivalent of saving 750 million tonnes of standard coal, helping reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 1.95 billion tonnes, the report released by the China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute showed.

China’s installed capacity of renewable energy reached one billion kilowatts in 2021, accounting for 44.8 percent of the country’s total installed power capacity, the report said.

FIGHTING COVID-19

China has consistently advanced the research and development (R&D) of COVID-19 vaccines among the BRICS countries, spearheading the global fight against the pandemic.

It is the first country to propose COVID-19 vaccine as a global public good, the first to support vaccine intellectual property rights exemption and the first to carry out cooperation in vaccine production with developing countries, playing a positive role in boosting steady economic recovery for all countries.

Chinese biopharmaceutical company Sinovac has made progress in the joint R&D as well as collaborative production of COVID-19 vaccines with BRICS countries.
