According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian is considering a return to Spain with terms over a new contract with Jurgen Klopp’s side yet to be agreed.

Adrian is in talks with the Anfield outfit over extending his stay on Merseyside into a third season, having arrived on a free transfer in 2019 (BBC) after being released by West Ham.

The Spaniard noted at the time of his arrival that he was a ‘very ambitious’ player intent on winning titles under Klopp, and helped the Reds win the Premier League in his first year.

Adrian made 11 outings during the 2019/20 Premier League season as the early stand-in for Alisson, but has only featured in the top-flight on four occasions since December 2019.

The 34-year-old could now elect to leave Liverpool once his £50,000-per-week (Spotrac) contract expires at the end of next month, with offers of a return to Spain on the table.

Adrian left his home country in 2013 to join West Ham from Real Betis, where he enjoyed just one season as the first-choice goalkeeper after graduating from the La Liga side’s academy.

TBR’s view:

Liverpool may want to keep Adrian at Anfield for another season as he can offer a solid enough stand-in, but Klopp confirmed in December that he was now viewed as the third-choice goalkeeper and earns considerably more than young hopeful Caoimhin Kelleher.

Klopp has continued to praise Adrian for his “top, top, top, top” attitude, noting in March via the Liverpool Echo: “If you want, he is now number three but in the dressing room, you will never see any difference. He is just a very strong character and helps the team even when he’s not playing.”

But as Kelleher makes just £15k-p/w, it would make sense for the Reds to focus on the 22-year-old supporting Allison next season and to allow Adrian to return to Spain when his current terms expire, which are lucrative for a back-up who rarely got off the bench.
