CLIMATE IMPACTS ON WHEAT YIELDS, PRICES

A China-led study predicts that global prices for the grain will exhibit steeper spikes at 2 degrees Celsius warming despite a slight increase in production.

Researchers find that under 2 degrees Celsius warming, elevated carbon dioxide fertilization will compensate for the increased warming stresses, resulting in a 1.7 percent increase in global wheat yields. However, wheat yield is likely to increase at high latitudes and decrease at low latitudes. It will lead the grain prices to change unevenly, enhancing existing inequalities.

ARCHAEOLOGY STUDY

Archaeologists have found an ancient ironware production and processing workshop dating back to the Han and Jin dynasties (202 B.C.- 420 A.D.) in central China’s Hunan Province.

The ruins of the workshop were found at the Xuantan relics site in Sangzhi County during an archaeological excavation. So far, about 3,300 square meters of the site have been excavated, and iron objects including knives and metallurgical remains such as copper ingots have been unearthed.

CANCER TREATMENT

Scientists from the Sun Yat-sen University’s Cancer Center led a phase III clinical trial, the results of which show that radiotherapy alone can replace concurrent radiotherapy and chemotherapy for patients with low-risk nasopharyngeal carcinoma, giving patients a better quality of life without compromising the curative effect.
