BEIJING, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) — The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China:
AI GOVERNANCE
As artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are developing rapidly in China and reshaping people’s lives, issues such as AI security, controllability and equity have become the concern of the AI industry.
During the 2023 World Internet Conference Wuzhen Summit which concluded Friday in east China’s Zhejiang Province, many companies and experts discussed the AI development and the potential challenges, calling for a governance mechanism to better steer the future of AI technologies.
During a speech, Yang Yuanqing, Lenovo Group’s chairman and CEO, said that the generative AI and the large language models have become accelerators and catalysts for the wide use of AI technologies, but there are still some challenges to be addressed, particularly in ensuring privacy protection and data security while promoting productivity.
TEMPERATURE ADAPTIVE MECHANISM
Chinese scientists have revealed the adaptive mechanism of the Yangtze finless porpoise to temperature changes by observing the thickness of its blubber, the thick layer of fat under the skin.
By monitoring four Yangtze finless porpoises using ultrasound imaging technology, the scientists investigated the variation patterns of blubber thickness (BT) and their relationship to environmental temperature changes.
They found that blubber was not evenly distributed in the skin of the animals. Moreover, different body regions display different sensitivities to seasonal temperature changes.
UNIVERSITY RESEARCH COLLABORATION
A new international academic network has been launched in Chongqing Municipality, southwest China, with the purpose of fostering closer research synergy between China and Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) partner countries.
The University Network for Research Collaboration: A Belt and Road Science and Technology Initiative (iUNRC) was initiated during the first Belt and Road Conference on Science and Technology Exchange, held from Monday to Tuesday in Chongqing. Twelve universities from BRI partner countries became the first members of the network.
