ROUNDUP: Big Blue tame Beverly Panthers

At Raymond J. Bourque Arena (Endicott College), Swampscott’s boys hockey team escaped with a 3-2 win against the Beverly Panthers. 

In the Saturday matinee, Jackson Bartram (2 assists) tucked the game-winning tally, while Kody Langevain and Will Roddy (assist) scored the other goals. 

Dom Pappalardo (28 saves) stood strong with goaltending duties as the Big Blue upped their record to 7-6-3 on the season. As of Sunday, Swampscott ranks No. 18 in the MIAA Division 4 Power Rankings.

BOYS HOCKEY

Marblehead 4

Winthrop 1

That’s how you capitalize on home ice. In a 4-1 final on Saturday, Marblehead’s boys hockey team racked up the goals against the Vikings of Winthrop.

Goal-scoring duties were performed by James Caeran (2), Avin Rodovsky, and Crew Monaco. Kyle Hart went home with two helpers, while Leo Burdge picked up the win between the pipes.

Arlington Catholic 3

St. John’s Prep 1

Two straight losses is a rarity for St. John’s Prep, but that’s what happened as Arlington Catholic picked up a 3-1 home win on Saturday.

Cooper Hosmer found the back of the net for the Eagles (12-3), who trailed 2-1 before Catholic’s empty-netter.

Newburyport 3

Lynnfield 2

It’s been an up-and-down season for the Pioneers (7-8), who met their match against the Newburyport Clippers on the road.

In Saturday’s overtime finish, Lynnfield didn’t go down easily. Trailing 1-0, Jack Carpenter potted the equalizer from Nick Kelter. Then, down 2-1 in the third period, Jarret Scoppettuolo cashed in off an Owen Considine assist. 

But in the end, Newburyport capitalized on a Lynnfield turnover to win the game in sudden death.

Nashoba 5

Lynn 0

Despite 37 saves from Nicholas DeNino, his Lynn Jets were taken down on enemy ice against Nashoba Saturday evening.

Bishop Feehan 2

St. Mary’s 1

The Shamrocks of Bishop Feehan got the job done at Connery Rink in Lynn, leaving with a 2-1 win against the Spartans. St. Mary’s Aiden St. Pierre scored the first goal of the game, but Feehan tucked the next two. 

GIRLS HOCKEY

Pope Francis 5

Marblehead 0

In a Sunday morning home matchup against Pope Francis, Marblehead fell, 5-0. Freshman goalie Scarlett Lee played well with 34 saves. Coach Hadley Woodfin also credited Maddie Graber “blocking shots up at forward” and Reece Fabrizio “holding and protecting our zone.” 

Beverly 5

Marblehead 0

Wins have been hard to come by for the Lady Headers, but their heart has never been in question. In Saturday’s home matchup against Beverly, Lee secured another 34 saves.

“Standout game from 8th grade defender Melanie Earl,” Woodfin said. “Great puck control and defensive play tonight.” 

BOYS BASKETBALL

Peabody 70

Bishop Fenwick 51

The visiting Peabody Tanners (15-2) continued their hot season with a 70-51 win against intercity rival Bishop Fenwick on Sunday. Raphel Laurent led the charge with 29 points, five rebounds, and five steals. His partner-in-crime, Anthony Forte (14 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds, 4 steals), did a little bit of everything in the win.

For the Crusaders, Jimmy Vahey and James Meklis each went home with 16 points, while Dom Paniello scored seven to go with 10 rebounds.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Wachusett 62

Bishop Fenwick 43

Wachusett stayed unbeaten with a 19-point win against visiting Bishop Fenwick, which dropped to 12-3 on the season. Isabella Lopez-Marin (13 points) and Cecilia Kay (11 points, 10 rebounds) both played well in defeat.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

St. Mary’s received several strong performances from Saturday’s Catholic Central League Championships at UMass Dartmouth.

For the boys (5th place), they were led by the relay team of Owen Duffy, Michael Kallelis, Travis Smith, and Luis Velasquez. On the girls’ (6th) side, Isabelle Amedeo, Giada Caruso,  Sheila Pimental, and Isabella Morillo qualified for states in both the 50 free and 100 back.

As for Bishop Fenwick, its girls placed third and boys finished sixth.

“Junior captain Hannah Ryan had a huge meet, winning the 100 free, 100 breaststroke, and was part of the winning 400 free relay team and second-place medley relay team (2:00.48),” said coach Gaby Trahant.

Sarah Shann of the Crusaders secured first place in diving with 234.10 points.

WRESTLING

St. John’s Prep 67 

Franklin 8

Host St. John’s Prep upped its record to 33-0 this season and won its sixth dual meet state title. It was coach Manny Costa’s final home duel meet before he retires at the end of the season after 34 years.

Winning Prep wrestlers were Graham Conway, Ben Schumacher, Braedon Goes, Boden Dormer, Jimmy Lally, Will LaVallee, Ryan DeSouza, Jayden D’Ambrosio, Vincent Bilotti, Rani Haddad, Marc Pineiro, and Alex Bajoras.
