ROUNDUP: Goals aplenty in Peabody-Saugus defeat
Share This

On Senior Night for the Peabody-Saugus boys hockey team, Masconomet played the role of the villain to spoil the party at McVann-O’Keefe Rink.

But in the 9-5 final, Dom Chianca and Michael Ryan each scored two goals for the hosts, while Artie O’Leary tucked the other.

“It was a close game throughout and the boys fought hard, but Masco extended its lead late,” said second-year Peabody-Saugus coach Jason Marshall.

But perhaps the story of the game was Peabody-Saugus goalie Evan Tybinkowski, who registered 49 saves.

“Evan absolutely stood on his head,” Marshall said.

Seniors Chianca and Ryan Jones were honored during a pregame ceremony for their dedication towards the program – flowers and pictures included.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Lynn Classical 32

Triton 29

That’s how you squeeze it out. Host Lynn Classical (12-3) edged Triton by three points on Wednesday, led by Lauren Wilson’s 13 points.

Keisha Perez and Divine Egbuta each had six points for the Lady Rams, while do-it-all Egbuta also tracked down 16 rebounds.

“Also playing outstanding for Classical were seniors Linda Jallow and Kaleigh Bullock,” said coach Tom Sawyer. “Our defense really won this game, only giving up 15 points through three quarters, and then we held off a spirited Triton rally in the fourth quarter to win the game.”

Triton – which missed an open three to tie the game at the buzzer – did have one player in double figures, that being Kendall Liebert (11 points).

Bishop Fenwick 60

Brookline 27

With its all-sport MIAA state tournament suspension, Fenwick is making the most of its regular season, one in which the Crusaders have now gone 13-3 in after doubling up Brookline, 60-27, on Wednesday.

Cecilia Kay (22 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks), Celia Neilson (6 points, 6 assists, 3 steals), and Tess Keenan (5 points, 5 assists, 4 steals) all did a little bit of everything in this one.

Fenwick returns to action Monday at Whitman-Hanson Regional High School.

Ipswich 54

Saugus 52

Close, but to no avail. Saugus’ girls basketball team fell to Ipswich by just two points in enemy territory on Wednesday.

The Sachems showed their heart, cutting the deficit to two points after trailing by nine with 90 seconds remaining.

GIRLS HOCKEY

St. Mary’s 5

Stoneham 0

St. Mary’s superstar freshman – yes, superstar – Bella Freitas of Everett eclipsed the 30-goal mark with a hat trick on Wednesday, catapulting her Spartans to a 5-0 win against Stoneham at Connery Rink in Lynn.

The Spartans upped their record to 16-1-1 with the victory.

Winthrop 6

Marblehead 2

Despite defeat, the Lady Headers (17 blocks in total) received third period goals from Maddie Graber and Ella Graham. Paige Waldman, Madi Reno, and Teyah Fleming dished out the assists, while freshman goalie Scarlett Lee stayed hot with 31 saves.

TRACK AND FIELD

In Wednesday’s Catholic Conference League Championship, St. John’s Prep ran away with it with 155 points. Xaverian (127) and BC High (65) followed in second and third, respectively.

The Eagles also won the freshman-sophomore division with 64 points. The next closest was Catholic Memorial with 28 points.
