Marblehead’s boys basketball team took care of Bishop Fenwick, 74-67, in the Larry McIntire IAABO Board 130 Classic as Nicholas Lemmond (22), Scott Campbell (17) and Ryan Commoss (16) combined for 55 points for the host Magicians (13-6).

They’ll try to win their third Classic in a row Monday (6 p.m.) when they play Bedford in the final. James Vahey led Fenwick (7-13) with 18 points, while Brady Jenkins had 15 and Lynn’s James Meklis added 14.

“Fenwick played very well and challenged us,” said Marblehead coach Mike Giardi. “We started to separate in the second half, but they kept fighting back and cut it to five with a minute left. We were able to hold on.”

Swampscott 41

The Big Blue led by two points at halftime and trailed by just one after three, but the fourth was “all Salem,” as said by Swampscott coach Jason Knowles.

It’s true. The Witches spooked with a 20-6 fourth-quarter run.

Liam Wales led Swampscott, 11-9, with 13 points, while Connor Chiarello added 10.

Peabody 52

Sydney Rogers (22 points, 7 rebounds) and Janie Papell (14 points, 4 rebounds) led the Scarlet Knights to a win in the first round of the Larry McIntire IAABO Board 130 Classic at Marblehead High School. 

Logan Lomasney led the Tanners with 18 points. North Andover (8-11) will play Reading in the championship game Monday at 4:15 p.m. Peabody (12-7) takes on Masconomet in the consolation game at 1 p.m.

Bishop Fenwick 48

Fenwick senior Cecilia Kay just about did it all in this one, sporting 21 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and three blocks to lead her Crusaders over Woburn, 48-39, in the James Grady Bracket of the Comcast Tournament at Woburn High School. 

Isabella Lopez-Marin and Caitlin Boyle each netted eight points, while Celia Neilson added six alongside four assists. Sam Dormer added four points and “solid play all-around,” according to Fenwick coach Adam DeBaggis.

Fenwick upped its record to 16-3 and plays Medfield in Monday’s title game at 2 p.m.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

It’s official. The St. John’s Prep swimming and diving team won the Division 1 state championship with a score of 239 points. The Eagles were followed by Westford Academy’s 212, and Sunday marked the 16th time St. John’s Prep has been crowned champion.

For St. Mary’s, Isabella Morillo impressed, finishing eighth in the 100 breaststroke and 12th in the 200 individual medley (2:20.59).

Offense was aplenty in Marblehead’s monstrous home win against the Beverly Panthers on Saturday. Avin Rodovsky (2 goals, 3 assists), Kyle Hart (goal, 3 assists) and James Caeran (2 goals, assist) led the attack.

Toby Grenier also found the back of the net, while Hogan Sedky (2 assists), Ben Wales (assist), and Sean Dolan (assist) also got involved offensively.

It took overtime for The Prep to squeak out Saturday’s matinee game, but the job was done in a 4-3 final. Jack Doherty potted the winning goal from Jake Vana in sudden death, while Ethan Goodrich, Johnny Tighe, and Vana tucked the other Eagles’ goals.

There wasn’t much going for Peabody-Saugus on Saturday, which dropped a crushing 13-2 game against the hosts of Winthrop, which received four goals from Luke Githinji and another two from Colin O’Lear.

Eight Vikings dished out assists, while two scored their first varsity goals (Joey Rich; Bert Kline).

Despite goals from John Crowley and Kyle Furlong, the Lynn Jets suffered a Senior Day loss to Saint Bernard’s at Connery Rink on Saturday.

PLNR didn’t need home ice on Saturday, potting seven goals to take care of Medford with ease. Catie Kampersal earned her 70th career point in the victory, while Ava Buckley scored twice to go with a pair of helpers and Alyse Mutti registered yet another shutout.

It was a happy Senior Day for the Lady Spartans, who tripled up Beverly at Connery Rink, 6-2. Alyssa Norden and Bella Freitas each delivered two-goal games.

Newburyport 7

Despite a strike from Marblehead’s Emilia Russo, the Lady Headers met their match against Newburyport at home.

TRACK AND FIELD

In the MIAA Division 4 state championship at the Reggie Lewis Center, St. Mary’s left with lots of positives. 

For the boys, Thomas hooks placed second in high jump, while Ernie Panias took sixth in the 55m. The 4×4 relay team of Devin Duval, Chance Bonfanti, Nick Miller, and Jimmy Jennings earned ninth place – just one spot away from a medal – but did break a school record. 

On the girls’ side, Lorynes Suriel snagged third in shot put, while the 4×4 team of Cam Dunn, Isabella Michel, Tina Amin, and Kelsey Kwiatek broke their own school record for the second time.

“Extremely proud of how we left off this season, and excited that we have a few, deservedly, moving into next week’s Meet of Champions,” said St. Mary’s coach Tristan Smith.
