Mom’s Cancer Fighting Angels have a new home in Saugus.
The annual car show, traditionally held at the now-shuttered Fuddruckers on Route 1, will move to the Saugus Middle/High School for its 10th year. When Fuddruckers announced its closure last year, it left organizer Guy Moley in the lurch as they sought to continue the tradition they had built. The nearest Fuddruckers, at Jordan’s Furniture in Reading, was off the table because the store does not permit car shows.
Offers to host the show rolled in from various other venues, including Boston Harley-Davidson, Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational High School, and Blessed Sacrament Church. But, Moley had other ideas.
Bill Pappas, who owned the old Full of Bull restaurant in town, ran Broadway Bill’s Car Show at the old Saugus High School for years. It was under Pappas that Moley said he gained his “knowledge and confidence on how to run a successful car show.”
Bringing the show to the Middle/High School this summer is “bringing it back to where it all began,” he said.
Before he set out to obtain permission to bring the show to the Middle/High School, Moley walked the property to see if it would actually be a fit for the show. In doing so, he was impressed by the opportunities it presented.
“I think it’s going to be a great spot,” he said, noting that he plans to host the car show itself on the High School’s side of the property, while leaving the Middle School area for spectators and visitor parking.
To bring the shows to the complex, Moley reached out to School Committee Chairman Vincent Serino. Moley said Serino was immediately on board and told him that hosting community events is exactly why the new complex was constructed. Indeed, the committee has spoken on numerous occasions about its desire for the school to become a community building.
Serino then got Superintendent of Schools Michael Hashem on board, and Moley was off and running.
Moley said he believes the show will be “bigger and better” at the new venue.
“I think the car enthusiasts are going to be very into it,” he said.
He added that he hopes the Middle/High School will host the shows for more than a decade.
