WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Marblehead hockey orders 10-piece against Peabody-Saugus

Peabody-Saugus played host to Marblehead in boys hockey action on Saturday, but let things slip away in a 10-3 loss to the explosive Headers.

One hat trick is usually enough, but a second is always welcome. Both Hogan Sedky and James Caeran lit the lamp three times apiece to lead Marblehead, which also received goals from Sean Dolan, Charlie Grenier, Drew DePhillips, and Toby Grenier.

DePhillips and Toby Grenier each scored their first varsity goals.

Marblehead’s Leo Burdge made 15 saves in the win, but three got by him as Brandon Berane also registered a hat trick to lead Peabody-Saugus. Zack Hartnett dished out two assists, too.

BOYS HOCKEY

St. John’s Prep 4
Catholic Memorial 1

A statement was made in Sunday’s Catholic Conference Hockey Challenge. After allowing the first goal of the game, St. John’s Prep ripped four unanswered goals in the first period to defeat Catholic Memorial, 4-1, in the Canton Ice House.

Scoring Eagles were Caleb White, Johnny Tighe, Christian Rosa, and Mason Luciano.

Winthrop 7
Swampscott 3

Despite holding a third-period cushion, Swampscott suffered in the final frame and allowed five goals against the Vikings of Winthrop.

In the 7-3 loss, Dom Pappalardo made 38 saves for the Big Blue, who received goals from Will Roddy, Ryan Frary, and Greg Balchenkoff.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Newburyport 6
Marblehead 3

Marblehead fought hard in enemy territory Saturday afternoon, but the Lady Headers were doubled up by Newburyport in a 6-3 final.

Samantha Demady scored an unassisted goal in the second period, followed by freshman sister Lizzie Demady (assisted by Teyah Fleming) who tucked one the same period. Fleming scored in the third to complete Marblehead’s scoring.

Freshman goalie Scarlett Lee made 20 saves for the Lady Headers.

Canton 3
St. Mary’s 2

St. Mary’s made it to the title game, but fell in overtime in the Martha’s Vineyard Classic on Sunday. Canton scored on a wraparound goal to win the game 3:14 into overtime.

St. Mary’s 4
Algonquin 3

Alyssa Norden, Bella Freitas, Vanessa Hall, and Audrey Zinck all scored goals in a 4-3 win for the Lady Spartans against Algonquin. With the victory, St. Mary’s advanced to Sunday’s Martha’s Vineyard championship game against Canton.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Burke 72
Lynn English 64

English trailed throughout the game and nearly came back Sunday afternoon. Ultimately, it came up short against Burke in enemy territory. Leading the way for the Bulldogs were Pierre Veras (18 points, 5 rebounds), Denzell Guillen (15 points, 8 rebounds), and Kyle Kemembin (14 points).

New Bedford 58
St. Mary’s 48

Fresh off his fantastic performance at Bishop Fenwick Friday night, JJ Martinez delivered with a 17-point game against New Bedford. In the end, however, St. Mary’s fell by double-digits at Emmanuel College in Boston.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

St. Mary’s 57
South Bronx Prep 38

A Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn gets even better when you win. For St. Mary’s, it dominated South Bronx Prep from beginning to end in the Rose Classic..

Bella Owumi (16 points), Sky Watson (13), Charleigh Green (12), and AJ Hyacinthe (8) led the Spartans’ charge.

Colonie 51
St. Mary’s 50

In the Rose Classic – a basketball tournament sponsored by Nike for several age groups – St. Mary’s fell in a heartbreaker against Colonie (New York), which dropped a pair of free throws to win the game with 2.9 seconds remaining.

Charleigh Green, an 8th grader, recorded 20 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks to lead the Spartans (9-3).

Bishop Fenwick 52
Central Catholic 32

No home court, no problem for Bishop Fenwick’s girls hoops team, which handled Central Catholic by 20 points on Sunday.

Cecilia Kay had 15 points, nine rebounds, and seven blocks, while Bella Lopez-Marin, Kate McPhail, Celia Neilson, and Anna Fertonani followed behind with strong games.

TRACK AND FIELD

On day one (Saturday) of the MSTCA Northeast Invite, St. Mary’s was well-represented. For the boys, Jimmy Jennings ran to a personal best in the 300m (37.83, MIAA-qualifying). There were also personal bests from three 55m hurdlers: Sebastian DeLorenzo, Chance Bonfanti, and Ryan Wing.

Strong girls performances came from Kelsey Kwiatek (1,000m, 3:21.88, MIAA-qualifying), Isabella Michel (300m, 49.81), and Kaylei Johnson (300m, 49.87).

On Sunday, Harmony Hope, Gianna Napoli, Lucian Paula, and Nick Fusco all performed well in their respective events.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

St. Mary’s 84
Arlington Catholic 70

St. Mary’s swam to a win against Arlington Catholic on Saturday, 84-70.

The Spartans secured first-, second-, and third-place finishes in eight of the 11 events. Travis Smith, Sheila Pimental, and Giada Caruso led the way.

WRESTLING

In Saturday’s Woburn Tournament, St. John’s Prep (319.5 points) defeated Bridgewater-Raynham (194) and Andover (192) to win it all.

Winning Eagles were Ben Schumacher, Jimmy Lally, Jayden D’Ambrosio, Rani Haddad, Alex Bajoras, Braedon Goes, Matt Pineiro, Marc Pineiro, Will LaValle, Ryan DeSouza, Vincent Bilotti, and Boden Dormer.
